Rising Tasmanian TSLW stars and Burnie Dockers Women’s players Jacqui Mercer and Lauren Stevenson have predicted that 2018 will be a better year in the Tasmanian State League, as they welcome new players to pre-season training.
Jacqui and Lauren are supported by their equally talented team-mates and twin sisters, Chloe and Libby Haines - who have also dared to dream big in AFLW and committed to the Burnie Dockers for 2018 .
What the players have to say about 2018
“There’s a new atmosphere and a new approach at the Dockers this year. And Richard (Richard Mulcahy- Assistant Women’s Coach) and Sophie (Sophie Edwards – Head Women’s Coach) have really good teamwork going – and I think we can go all the way with them.” said Lauren Stevenson.
“He (Richard Mulcahy – Assistant Women’s Coach) brings a bit more of a solid basis to basic skills. It allows us to progress our football – step by step - but not a second is wasted.” said Jacqui Mercer.
Why we've worked hard in the off season
“Why I’ve worked so hard in the off season is because we want to get to the next level and eventually get drafted – hopefully. So we both push each other to our limits – and we want to be better than each other.” said Libby Haines.
“Why I’ve adopted a more professional approach to the game is that I want to make it to that next level and work hard for it.” said Chloe Haines.
Message for inexperienced players
“ Join up and approach football a bit differently to your high school leagues or your North West leagues ”
Come with us and be professional … be disciplined but at the same time still enjoy your footie. It’s all about the team – your mates – and playing the game you love.” said Jacqui Mercer.
